How to Teach Your Child to Lose Well.

"Don't be upset, it's just a game" β a line that never works. The child is genuinely upset, and that is normal. The good news: losing well is a skill, not a personality trait, and it can be taught. Not through lectures, but through small habits. Below is what specialists advise (and where they honestly admit there is less evidence than we would like), the trick of short games, a couple of true stories, and the thing that matters most: treating a loss as information and a new plan of action.
In short
Finding it hard to lose is a normal part of development, not being spoiled. The parts of the brain that quiet the storm of frustration keep maturing until around age 9, so tears over a lost round of Uno at age 4 are about age, not character. Children learn to lose not through persuasion but through three things: praising the process rather than "you're smart"; practicing with short games that have a quick "let's go again"; and turning any setback, together, into the question "what will we try differently?" Five minutes a day, no pressure, no guilt.
Why losing is hard β and why that is normal
A young child thinks about winning and losing in black and white: I won, so I'm good; I lost, so everything is ruined. And the parts of the brain (the prefrontal cortex) that help put the brakes on this storm are only being built β until around age 9, and for some children even longer. So the tears, the "I'm not playing anymore," and the flipped-over board are not tantrums and not your failure as a parent, but a normal stage.
Specialists agree: most children begin to lose steadily and "like a good sport" closer to age 9 β and that is a reference point, not a deadline, since children vary enormously. An honest caveat: the age ranges here are a generalization from practitioners, not a precise measure. So the main rule is simple: first acknowledge the feeling, then gently guide β rather than shaming the tears. And this is not just "soft" advice: a recent review of randomized studies found that teaching parents to calmly accept and name children's emotions genuinely improved the child's emotional competence (England-Mason and colleagues, 2023).
What actually works
1. A loss is information, not a verdict
The most powerful move β and it is all about mindset. A mistake and a loss carry information: they show exactly what is worth changing. The adult's job is to help turn a negative result into a new plan of action: "what is this telling us? what will we try differently next time?"
In research on learning, a mistake followed by review and a second attempt produces deeper, more transferable understanding than when a child is shown the correct answer right away (Manu Kapur, "productive failure"; Janet Metcalfe, "learning from errors"). A large review confirmed this: letting children struggle first and explaining afterward noticeably improves understanding and transfer (Sinha and Kapur, 2021: 53 studies, effect d β 0.36). An important bit of honesty: what works is not the mistake itself but the mistake plus the review β without the question "what will we change?" there is no magic. And another honest caveat about age: for the youngest children (roughly early elementary school) and for "general" skills, the reverse worked better β show first, then let them try. In other words, "let them make the mistake first" is not a universal trick but one that depends on age and task. And one curious note at the end: both children and adults tend to feel they learned better "when they were shown the right way first" β even though, in reality, their own mistake with review teaches more deeply.
2. Praise the process, not "you're smart"
"You're so smart / you're the best" sounds nice, but it ties self-worth to a label: lose once, and the label is under threat, so the child avoids anything hard and gives up faster. Praise for the process β "you tried different approaches," "you didn't quit when it got hard" β keeps the door open instead (Mueller and Dweck, 1998; Kamins and Dweck, 1999). This is also where Carol Dweck's "yet" comes from: not "I didn't manage it," but "I didn't manage it yet."
An honest caveat: the promise "adopt a growth mindset and grades will soar" is greatly exaggerated. Large-scale checks show the effect is small and context-dependent (meta-analysis by Sisk and colleagues, 2018; experiment by Yeager and colleagues, 2019: the effect is real, but modest and mostly among children who already have it harder). Two recent 2023 meta-analyses came to different emphases on almost the same data: Macnamara and Burgoyne conclude that in the strictest studies the effect is close to zero (and they suspect publication bias), while Burnette and colleagues find that there is a small but real effect, mainly among at-risk children. What's more, even the classic contrast of "praise the process, not the person" did not always replicate in new pre-registered checks (Bennett-Pierre and colleagues, 2024). The conclusion is honest and modest: process praise and "yet" are not a magic lever for grades; they are useful because they don't tie self-worth to a label and because they reflect how learning actually works.
3. The recovery loop: name it β breathe β reframe β new plan β try again
Losing well is a sequence you can rehearse:
- Name the feeling: "You really wanted to win, and that's disappointing."
- A pause for the body: breathe out, hug, step away for a minute.
- Reframe: "It's a game, there will be another round" / "It's information, not the end."
- Build a new plan: "What will we try differently?"
- Try again: "I haven't managed it yet."
At first the adult says these steps out loud β the child learns by hearing them β and over time begins to move through the loop on their own.
The trick: short games where a loss passes quickly
One of the loveliest tricks is exactly this: short, fast games β rock-paper-scissors, simple dice and cards. The logic is this: the game lasts seconds, the child loses and wins in turn, and, most importantly, sees that the next round comes almost right away. The loss becomes small, not scary, and clearly temporary. In essence this is "training in small doses" β what psychologists call graduated exposure: getting used to something unpleasant through many tiny, safe repetitions.
Honestly: this is sound clinical logic and advice that specialists give, not a "best" remedy proven by a rigorous experiment. But the trick is gentle, free, and fits well with what is known about "stop-start" games ("Simon Says," "Red Light, Green Light") β they train self-control, the same "muscle" that holds back the urge to flip the table.
What helps alongside the game:
- Win yourself sometimes. Don't let the child win every time: if a child never loses, they get no practice, and a "handed" win feels empty. Games of chance are handy β there, wins and losses divide themselves up.
- Say your own loss out loud: "Oops, I lost! That plan didn't work β a bit annoying, but next time I'll go about it differently." That way the child hears what calm recovery sounds like.
- A quick reset: "You lost that round. Shall we play again?" β exactly the fast restart the whole thing is for.
This is not the only way β but one of the simplest to start today.
Heroes who were rejected at first
Children (especially around ages 6β7) are helped by knowing that their favorite heroes weren't born "great" β they fell many times and kept going. A few true stories:
- J.K. Rowling: the Harry Potter manuscript was turned down by 12 publishers before one said "yes" (the story goes that it came down to the editor's 8-year-old daughter, who couldn't wait to read more).
- Dr. Seuss: his first book was rejected around 27 times; he was already walking home to burn it β and happened to run into a college classmate who had just become a children's book editor.
- Stephen King: he threw the first pages of "Carrie" in the trash; his wife pulled them out and talked him into continuing. The novel was rejected around 30 times.
- James Dyson: he built 5,126 failed vacuum-cleaner prototypes. The 5,127th worked β and became known around the world.
- Marie SkΕodowska-Curie: in the Poland of that time, women weren't admitted to university, so she studied in secret, at the "Flying University," which kept changing addresses to avoid the police. She became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize.
And a small lesson in critical thinking along the way: not all "failure stories" are true. The myth that "Einstein failed math" is false (he knew math brilliantly), and Michael Jordan wasn't "cut from the team" at 15 β he simply didn't make the varsity squad and made it a year later. Checking pretty stories is a useful skill too, and you can practice it together.
By age
- Ages 2β3. Meltdowns over losing and mistakes are expected, the "brakes" haven't grown in yet; don't moralize. Be nearby and name the feeling in simple words ("you're really angry that the tower fell"), and offer a physical reset. Games should be cooperative or based on chance, with the winner not at the center. The main learning comes from your out-loud example: "Oops, I dropped it. I'll try again."
- Ages 4β5. Introduce the vocabulary of losing: "someone wins, someone loses, and we can play again." Praise the process, not "you're the best." Teach the tiny loop: notice the feeling β breathe out β try again. First acknowledge, then guide.
- Ages 6β8. Now "a loss is information" works: after a mistake or a defeat, ask "what did that tell you? what's the new plan?" Introduce "yet." Share your own slip-ups. Name the moves of good sportsmanship out loud (congratulate the winner) β these are learned scripts, not instinct.
- Ages 9β11. Most are already calmer about wins and losses, but the stakes are rising. Help them reframe: "one bad match doesn't mean you're bad at this." Break the loss down as data: what worked, what to change, what was within your control and what wasn't. Don't rush to rescue.
- Ages 12β14. Emotions around failure carry more weight β don't dismiss them. Hand the new plan over to them: ask, rather than lecture. Be honest: effort matters, but sometimes it's smarter to change strategy or ask for help. And set an example β tell them about a work failure of your own and what you changed.
What not to do
- Don't smooth every path all the time. If you always rescue and never let them lose, the child has nowhere to practice. Constant overprotection is linked to more anxiety and less confidence (that's a correlation, not a proven cause β but a reason not to rush to the rescue).
- Don't pile on inflated praise. "You're a genius! You're the best in the world!" can undermine self-worth, especially in insecure children (Brummelman and colleagues).
- Don't bet everything on "grit" alone. "Just more perseverance" is overrated: in large-scale checks, grit predicts success weakly and overlaps almost entirely with conscientiousness (CredΓ© and colleagues, 2017).
- Don't shame the tears or dismiss the feeling ("nonsense, nothing to cry about"). First acknowledge the feeling β then help the child handle it.
Frequently asked questions
Is it okay to let the child win so they don't cry? Sometimes β yes, but not all the time. A child needs to practice losing too, and a "handed" win feels empty. It's easier to take games of chance β there everything divides itself.
My son gets angry and throws the pieces. Is that normal? Up to about age 9 β yes, it's about age. Be nearby, name the feeling, help the child move through the recovery loop and try again. But if something worries you seriously and doesn't pass, calmly put the question to a specialist β that's a sensible next step, not a reason to blame yourself.
Won't they grow up a "loser" if I let them lose? More likely the opposite. The ability to lose grows precisely out of practicing small, safe losses β not out of their absence.
At what age should I start with this? From the very youngest β just simplify the words. Even for a two-year-old, "it fell β let's try again" works fine; for a teenager, "what's the new plan?"
